Nokia may not be giving much importance to Symbian but Opera isn’t discounting Symbian for other OS. Symbian is still one of the most popular OS in developing countries like India.

Opera has released a new version of it’s Opera Mobile browser, numbered at version 11.5.1, this version looks to bring a host of significant changes for good. Below are most notable changes introduced with the update :

1. Added predictive text input and language choice in search field
2. Improved stability in out of memory situations
3. Fixed issues with browser freezing
4. Fixed issues with browser when Opera Link is enabled
5. Fixed issues with text selection and cut/copy/paste
6. Fixed issues with reappearing search engines after deletion
7. Fixed issues with selecting text using Up/Down navigation keys
8. Fixed issues with third-party input keyboards (QQ, Baidu, Sougou).

Nokia N8 running on Symbian Anna has received a new software update that says to offer plenty of fixes in a small 1MB over-the-air update. This is first time that I am downloading a update of that size and it’s nice, if updates always arrived in small MB’s. Below is the change-log of the pushed update from Nokia :

1. Usability improvements to the OS
2. Faster email and messaging
3. Quicker GPS lock-down
4. Various bug fixes giving more desired stability to the handset.

The update is live for Nokia N8 and will slowly be rolled-out for other smartphone running on Symbian Anna. Now, what next? Belle…

Nokia has released the new PC suite for users bringing new name for the app, fresh user interface and performance. Below are it’s new introduced features :

2. The application has a refreshed look and feel
3. The new Support view offers info and help with using Nokia Suite and your phone

Nokia is soon going to announce something special related to Symbian. We can’t think of them announcing the continuation of Symbian OS which would be great, if they do! the stuff must be related to announcement of few new phones running on latest Symbian Anna.

Symbian Anna has had a share of praise for its usability by users but launching phones which aren’t going to get support from the manufacturer raises doubts of its success. Few months ago, Nokia announced Nokia N9 with MeeGo and the world was looking forward to seeing the device in stores, and now we know that Nokia isn’t interested in MeeGo and only a few country (who?) will receive the handset. The theology of conducting such events which results in nothing is bizarre with no words to describe.

Nokia has its strength in hardware. Nokia N8 is still the best the camera phone in the market that very phones can come close. Okay, it runs on Anna and developers don’t show much interest in Symbian and thus there are few apps to play around. It is not that Android is perfect, it has it’s areas of woes but the support from developers who look for earning and manufacturers supporting it continuously, pushes it ahead.

Nokia has released a new software update for their recently released phones running on Symbian Anna, Nokia E6 and Nokia E7. The firmware update for both the handsets isn’t very major, the main purpose is to fix few discovered bugs and give more desired stability to the handset. The new firmware or software update is numbered as v22.014. Below is the list of notable changes associated with this firmware upgrade :

1. Web app updated.
2. New Icon for Social app.
3. Improvements in Kinetic scrolling and Page rendering.
4. Fixed bugs in USB connectivity as reported by few users.
5. Mail for Exchange bugs fixed.

The update is pushed over OTA (over-the-air) and through Nokia Ovi Suite. Connect the phone to PC via USB, open Ovi Suite and check Software Updates. Though the update has been released by Nokia, it’s not available for every region. It may take few weeks for every carrier and region to get the update.

Before going for this update, we always recommend two things :

1. Look to completely charge-up your device battery as the update. You won’t like your device switching off in-between the update process.
2. Also, try to back-up your messages, contacts, application settings and whatever you can. If something goes wrong, this little step can save you from a lot of headache. There is already a new feature called UDP that solves you problem of making a backup, but still doing it manually as precaution will be nice.

Stephen Elop has again appeared (twice in one week) before press to deny rumors of Nokia being available to buyers. He went straight to the point and told “Nokia is not for sale.” He denied all speculations of Nokia looking to sell it’s phone division, or sell the company as a whole.

The story goes like this, Eldar of mobile-review reported that Microsoft is entering in talks with Nokia for a possible buyout and the decision process be completed in a Year. After getting the tip, the news media exploded with daily analysis of Nokia’s reasons, possibilities and so on.

Instead of getting coverage for their upcoming products, stuff they were working to making run Nokia better, the concentration was somewhere else. Though, as the tip of Nokia sell out broke, Nokia’s management denied it outright but that happened earlier also, in scenarios such as Nokia using Windows phone, dropping ovi and so on. The rumors went on to see life and thus media was confused, whom to believe!

Earlier, this week there were reports of Samsung buying Nokia’s phone division (not the whole company). We didn’t posted it as we thought this was cheap publicity by bloggers and nothing else.

I never thought I would read or post such a news, but coming from Eldar of mobile-review.com, this story can’t be taken as some cheap publicity stuff by some site. He is one of the most respected voices at Internet.

The news is related to starting of new round of talks between Microsoft and Nokia, related to buying out of Nokia’s phone division by Microsoft.

Nokia was suffering from tumbling profits and it bought Stephen Elop as it’s CEO to take charge and regenerate profits. Stephen Elop, was earlier heading Microsoft Business Division as president and after his induction, he has made few of the never thinkable decisions that company stood as ideology and is now slowly destroying everything that Nokia once stood for. I may sound harsh, but things are going that way only.

He made Nokia ditch Symbian and bought Windows phone to table. Microsoft persuaded Nokia for years for it to use Windows Phone OS but it failed but the new CEO made the decision possible. Though, board members at Nokia raises objections to these decisions, they are often backed by shareholders of Nokia at NYSE.

A company which is big with phenomenon reach is trying to become tiny by cutting jobs, ditching Symbian, leaving MeeGo and few others in name of running it smarter.

He isn’t becoming jobless, but his decisions are making others jobless and now, Nokia may itself loose it’s identity.

Microsoft on the other hand is not playing evil, it is just looking to buy Nokia. Last week, Microsoft bought Skype at a price of around $8 billion. Though, analysts cited the deal as too high or double the price of actual valuation of Skype, Microsoft quietly went ahead and closed the deal.

In a not so surprising move, Nokia has decided to ditch the name ovi in favour of just calling it services from Nokia. The decision comes in wake major ongoing efforts to re-structure Nokia. Ovi was started with big announcements, but it’s lack of popularity and tumbling profits has forced Nokia to go thorough these changes.

The news comes as just re-branding of name, and all services is said to be continued as usual.

However, there are reports that Nokia is looking to merge most of it’s services with Microsoft. Nokia has already ditched Ovi mail earlier, and Ovi maps is destined to merge with Windows Phone services.

I wrote most of it’s services as I don’t think Microsoft is interested in Ovi life tools, which caters to farmers and basic necessities of rural areas. And those services which don’t get merge with Windows Phone will probably be ditched by Nokia later.

It is likely that anybody buying a new Nokia device later this year will start to see the new branding on services included within, however anybody already owning a Nokia phone will see this new rebranding through future software updates.

Does this also mean big changes for coming updates and improvements to your services experience? No change to the plans there either. Our mobile services will progress along their planned development roadmaps, and will also continue to be available to consumers around the world on our devices. Again, only the naming will change to reflect Nokia-branded experiences.

So, this is relatively big news, but the important thing to remember is that this not changing the experiences that you have come to enjoy. Your feedback and insight into the evolution of our services has been critical to getting them where they are today. Your feedback is even more critical as we accelerate the expansion of our portfolio to include Nokia devices running on the Windows Phone platform. These new popped up images shows new customized screen with fresh set of icons that were never seen before, along with widgets which could be customized according to use-defined guidelines of dimensions, thus allowing users to add more widgets.

Current version of Symbian aka “anna” doesn’t offer this possibility of reducing the size of widgets and thus further addition of widgets in the same homescreen isn’t possible.

The future OS update is expected to arrive on existing devices as the PR 3.0 update as you can see from the above depicted image. There aren’t many specific details out of Nokia for the schedule release except for the images and mind you, these images may also turn out to be some Photoshop showcase but that’s little unlikely.

Nokia has released new maps for Ovi maps with photorealistic 3D models covering entire cities, including suburbs, available for exploration.

To make this possible Nokia has partnered with C3, the leading provider of 3D mapping solutions, offering photo-realistic models of the world.

C3 uses modern camera equipment to capture as many as one image per second of the same object from up to 100 different angles.

Nokia in a PR release stated “people can scale up and down and move around objects such as buildings and trees from their desktop, experiencing a virtual but super realistic perspective of new places. Road-level imagery completes the experience with a detailed 360-degree panoramic view of streets.”

Nokia’s 3D offering is the most realistic available and goes beyond rendering limited areas and buildings by making entire cities, including suburbs, available for exploration.

These 3D maps are currently available for 20 cities, and more cities will be covered gradually.

“Ovi Maps’ photorealistic 3D models of metropolitan areas are a significant step towards our vision of bridging the real and virtual world, with location-based services being the glue,” said Michael Halbherr, senior vice president, Nokia.

“With Ovi Maps on mobile, Nokia has shown its ability to transform a useful feature into a mass market experience that lays the foundation for innovation in location-based services beyond traditional routing benefits. With its efforts to expand the service to the web, Nokia is proving that it offers a holistic service,” said Daryl Chiam, Principal Analyst, Canalys.

These maps are currently accessible only from PC via desktop browser, and not from your Nokia mobile.
