Facebook has released a new camera app for users of iOS (iPhone, iPod and iPad). The app called ‘Facebook Camera’ has been made available for free and can be downloaded from the app store.
Facebook camera comes very close to mimic the functionality of Instagram, the company that Facebook purchased for more than $1 billion. The app presents you a feed of the stories as is the case with Instagram. You can snap images, then apply filters, crop images and upload them.
The built-in camera app in the Facebook app allows you to upload one image at a time, however ‘Facebook Camera’ removes the restriction allowing you to upload multiple images. There is a total of 15 filters to choose from and none of those are found in the Instagram app. These are different and some of them are really nice.
According to the developers behind the app, ‘Facebook Camera’ was in development for a long time and most of these filters were developed before the closure of Instagram deal. So, what’s the purpose of buying Instagram when they were already developing a similar app?
Firstly, Instagram was becoming a success and could have proved to be a major competitor to Facebook Camera. This however seems unlikely. It’s the know-how of the app developers and the user base Instgaram brings is the key.
Facebook knows that the sharing of images is going to be a huge thing in the future and they want to have a serious presence. Also, in the future we may see a single app (Facebook Camera + Instagram) for users, as developing two apps of similar functionality doesn’t make much sense. As of now, the app is only available for users of iOS and Android users will have to wait a while before getting the app.
