Microsoft registers microsoft-sony.com domain name

Microsoft Sony Together

A recent story was published by winrumors related to purchase of two domain names by Microsoft. You might say, what’s interesting in a domain name deal? the registered domain names were ‘microsoft-sony.com’ and ‘sony-microsoft.com’. In the past, we have seen corporate companies purchasing bad domain names that someone may use to harm their image or carry-out a campaign of onslaught against something. They buy it and just keep it with them to prohibit others from using it.

The attachment of word Sony to the domain name gave rise to all set of speculations with possibilities of Microsoft tying up with Sony to launch a new game service for Gamers. Both, Sony and Microsoft are successful in gaming arena, the possibility of such a tie-up might be possible with Microsoft having edge on software side and Sony having edge on hardware par, but that doesn’t make any sense as there is no panic situation. I agree that companies don’t require panic situation to come together, it’s just that it seems unlikely to say the leas.

The next was possibility of Sony-Ericsson using Windows phone OS in their smartphone and thus Microsoft has bought the domain names, which I think is a foolish judgement. I can’t explain in other words.

Thanks to a statement from Frank Shaw - Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Corporate Communications, who said that these registrations are just “defensive domain hold.” It means they are just bought to prohibit someone from purchasing them. You can type ‘microsoft-sony.com’ and ‘sony-microsoft.com’ and you will be re-directed to Bing’s search engine with some web results shown in front of you. Go and give it a try for yourself.
