In mobile apps ecosystem, an operating system that hosts more apps is considered to more successful. This is certainly true in case of attracting developers but for an user, these numbers don’t necessarily mean much.
“It has taken 25 days to go from 50,000 to 60,000 items, compared to 40 days to go from 40,000 to 50,000. At the time of writing, 61,479 items have been published. Of these, 24,951 were added in the last 90 days and 11,935 were added in the last 30 days. These items come from 15,173 different publishers” - Source
How many apps would you prefer to install on your mobile? Say 10, 100 or ridiculous 1000. You definitely get a lot of choice in picking but numbers don’t reflect the quality of the apps hosted by the platform. This is where I don’t like making these numbers a big study-case. As of now, I think iOS provides few of the best polished apps with nice features, though I am an Android fan.
Microsoft hosted market place for apps has recently crossed the 60,000 mark and going at this pace, it is definitely destined to reach 1,00,000 within two months or earlier than that.
