Why Nokia is currently working on an Windows Mobile Phone?

In a recently leaked presentation featuring Nokia’s software and services plans for Year 2010, there is a mentioning of platform on which devices are to be built. There are four platforms mentioned, in which the most surprising is the “Windows”.

Is Nokia quietly cooking an Windows Mobile Phone? Nokia, already has partnership with Microsoft where it provides support for sync and few other features for its handsets on Windows at computers. Recently, Microsoft announced the availability of Office 2010 for Nokia’s E Series handsets and it will be further expanded to other segments.

Nokia is already loosing its market share in smartphone business with Symbian s60 as Android getting rapidly adopted by manufacturers and iPhone’s selling like hot cakes. Nokia has 40% of the smartphone market share and to boost up its share, it may be looking to diversify its platform of working?

HTC was the of the pioneers of Windows mobile platform, but with Android taking off its wings, things are getting worse for Microsoft and thus it needs a real boost in partnership to drive it’s market share. Nokia is still a very big player in terms of volumes, except for Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Nokia created Maemo OS for high end geek style phones but it later partnered with Intel and announced MeeGo. MeeGo doesn’t provide exclusivity to Nokia, meaning any manufacturer can use it according to his needs and Intel will definitely be looking to partner other manufacturers in doing so.

MeeGo OS will be designed to run exclusively on Intel designed processors and Intel will definitely engage with other manufactures for using their OS and thus pushing sales of their chips. Thus partnering with Microsoft gives Nokia an option to diversify their high end geek phones and not to get stuck with using Intel chips as Windows will run on varietly of processors.

I have discussed few things, however it can turned out to be nothing at last. Nokia already has a line of products called “Netbooks” and may be, they are referring to using Windows there. MeeGo is poised to power their Netbooks but it will take time to evolve as an operating system and using Windows in year 2010 looks the choice. Whatever may be the case, time will answer the question but Mixing Windows with Nokia can be definitely viable.
