RIM, the Canadian parent company of Blackberry handsets with services like BBM has quietly set-up a Server in Mumbai to monitor the messages that are processed by Blackberry servers, flowing in and out of India. The development came after a series of denial from RIM.
For security concerns, the Government of India had asked the Canadian handset maker to offer complete lawful access to its encrypted BlackBerry services for monitoring. The Indian government threatened to a shut down of BlackBerry Services if RIM did not fulfill the necessary requirements. The asking took place after the Mumbai attack where the security agencies failed to trace encrypted BBM messages.
During a high-level meeting of the Union ministry, the heads of the Indian security agencies were informed of the installation of servers at Mumbai. All the major telecom operators in India such as Airtel, MTNL, Vodafone, Reliance and BSNL are offering these services. RIM currently offers BBM services in 175 countries. Now in the wake of above development, its safe to say that the BBM services won’t be shut-down in India.
