Skype launched for Android 2.1 and above

Skype has finally been launched for all handsets, operating on Android 2.1 and above. Earlier, Skype was available for Android, but it was made to run only on Verizon wireless handsets.

Skype press release stated “With the new app, you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and send and receive IMs for free, one-to-one or with a group. You can also call phones at Skype’s great rates – over WiFi or 3G”

You can get Skype for Android from the Android Market or from skype.com/m. Currently Skype is available in all regional Markets except in China and Japan.

Skype has been tested for compatibility with all HTC and Motorola devices running on Android 2.1 or above.  It should work on all the other devices matching the software requirements too.

Samsung Galaxy S users should be aware that the Skype app has some issues with the phone. Skype is working on them and hopefully will come up with a fix soon.
