Sony has released a new software update for users of 2011 Xperia phones which includes Xperia arc, Xperia arc S, Xperia neo, Xperia neo V, Xperia mini, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Xperia ray. The released build has been reported as 4.1.B.0.587 on ICS (4.0.4). This is the second release featuring Android 4.0.4 as core.
What’s new in the update?
There is no official changelog available with released update, however Sony promises fixation of stability issues and performance related bugs.
Before going for this update, we would like to request you to make a backup of your settings, contacts, apps, and whatever you can. If you require to manually restore the update, this small step can save you from a lot of mess. There are dedicated apps available in the Google Play that allows to make the backup.
Also, look to completely charge your battery as you won’t like to see your device getting switched off in-between the update process.
However, we would like to caution you that not everything is smooth with the update. Few users are complaining about performance lag, heating up issues and few others. You can read about them by going here (Sony Blog).
Personally, I updated Sony Xperia Ray to ICS Android 4.0.4 and never found the smooth performance that I first saw on Gingerbread build. In a hope to improve performance, I rooted the phone, removed bloatware, used scripts to overclock, reduced the number of background running apps, but nothing worked. The phone was operational but the performance was definitely down than what I had in Gingerbread, then I reverted back. So, it’s up to you whether you want to update or skip. With respect to new functionality with ICS, there are apps which can take care of those needs.
To update your 2011 Xperia device, you are required to be already running on any ICS build to get the update notification directly on your phone. If you are running on Gingerbread, you won’t get the notification. We would request you to also your experiences.
